U.S. Capitol, 1861-1998

Some of my earliest memories are of sitting with my family and friends in our darkened living room while my father manually inserted one slide after the other into our projector (we didn't have the luxury of a carousel). Rather than finding this tedious (as most normal kids would), I was fascinated by these images. To me, they were more than snapshots of vacations and family outings; they were glimpses into the past.

As I grew older, I would occasionally see an old photograph of a street or building. Some of the scenes were familiar, while some tree-lined dirt roads had long since been paved and developed. I thought that someone should compare these vintage scenes with the modern views.

I got tired of waiting, so I decided to do it myself.

I began to research old photographs of cities and other scenes, determine the location of the scene and capture the modern view from the same perspective. I researched collections ranging from small private collections to public libraries to the National Archives. Once I located an interesting scene, I found the location from where it was taken and determined whether the same perspective could be established. In each modern view, I tried to make sure that at least one building or other landmark was visible in both images to provide a point of reference.

For years this was just a hobby and the ever-increasing number of contrasting scenes hung in our house. When friends visited, they noted that they made attractive art and began to suggest that I make them available for others to purchase.

I have several more in various stages of completion and I'll be adding them to this site, so keep checking back.

Also, if you have any questions or requests, please feel free to contact me by e-mail or standard mail.
